More about your instructors and speakers:

Ezra Eeman is Strategy & Innovation Director at NPO, the Dutch Public Broadcasting organisation. Ezra has almost 20 years of experience in media, innovation and journalism. Previously he was Change Director at the international media company Mediahuis, where he was responsible for coordinating newsroom transformation and digital acceleration across a wide range of cross-media brands. Before that, Ezra was the Head of Digital, Transformation and Platforms at the EBU, The European Broadcasting Union, and worked as head of an innovation lab at VRT, the Flemish public broadcaster. 

Nikita Roy is a data scientist, journalist and media entrepreneur. She hosts the globally acclaimed Newsroom Robots podcast, which consistently charts among the top technology podcasts across 25 countries. Her digital news startup, The NRI Nation, has been incubated at Harvard Innovation Labs, is a two-time semifinalist at the Harvard President’s Innovation Challenge, and has received the Harvard Innovation Lab’s Spark Grant. Nikita has been a part of the International Center for Journalists’ News Innovation Lab and the Google News Initiative Startups Lab.

Anita Zielina is an experienced digital media executive, strategic advisor and board member with a focus on digital transformation, modern leadership and management, as well as product and business strategy. She is the founder and CEO of Better Leaders Lab. Anita is an Executive in Residence at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY in NYC and serves as a non-executive board member at the Austrian Public Broadcaster (ORF), as well as the inaugural board chair of the News Product Alliance (NPA). She holds an Executive MBA from INSEAD and a Master in Law from Vienna University.

Professor Charlie Beckett is the founding director of Polis, the think-tank for research and debate around international journalism and society in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE. Polis runs events for journalists and the public as well as a programme of fellowships and research. It has a Summer School, holds conferences and publishes reports. Charlie is leading the Polis JournalismAI project and was Lead Commissioner for the LSE Truth, Trust & Technology Commission (T3). Charlie Beckett is a regular commentator on journalism and politics for the UK and International media.

Bo Kim is a senior strategy and product leader, with a track record of driving business growth in the tech and media space. With a passion for leveraging data to inform business strategy and a deep understanding of product development processes, Bo has helped companies such as The New York Times, Vox Media, Storify and Livefyre achieve their goals and stay ahead of the competition. She is currently Director International Audience, Strategy & Operations of the The New York Times, leading growth, operational and coverage strategy across the company’s top priorities.

FAQ

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at leaders, managers and strategists working in or with media companies. The ideal participant is a decision maker, responsible for or participating in strategic processes. While the program is geared towards leaders, you do not need to directly manage a team we also welcome senior individual contributors or strategists.

Some examples of roles that might be a good fit for the course: Strategy lead, business development lead, department head, digital director, innovation lead, senior product manager or product director, online editorial director, digital transformation coordinator, managing editor, business director, VP Digital, Chief of Staff.

What is a Deep Dive?

Small group learning experiences with confidential conversations are centered around a specific business transformation, management or leadership challenge. They are designed to allow for immediate impact even for busy professionals: After finishing a Deep Dive, we want you to immediately be ready to tackle the issues addressed more effectively. Our Deep Dives are 1-2 days (in person) or 1-2 weeks long (online).

What happens after I apply?

We’ll get back to you within 10 days to let you know if you’re accepted into the course. You will then receive the payment details. Keep in mind that your spot in the program will not be secured until you paid the tuition in full. Payments are possible by bank transfer or via Stripe. 

Is everyone who applies going to be accepted?

We strive to provide a productive, well designed learning environment. Therefore, we reserve the right to turn down applications if the participant does not fulfill the course requirements.

Where does the course take place?

The course will take place virtually via Zoom in the week from January 22 to 26. Ten hours of live sessions will be spread out over 5 days, and course content will also be made available asynchronously.

Are there full or partial scholarships available?

We have a limited number of full scholarships available. These scholarships, brought to you by the Better Leaders Academy Equity Fund, will cover full course fee for one or several participants who:

  • Work in small and / or emerging organizations that strive to cover communities and stories that are often overlooked
  • and / or: are themselves from a demographic, a socio-economic background or a country that is not equally represented in the media innovation discourse and often overlooked
  • and / or: are self payers who experienced social hardship

How long is the Early Bird rate valid?

The Early Bird rate (15% off the full price rate) is valid till November 10, 2023. 

Can the Early Bird rate be redeemed together with a voucher?

Those who participated in our inaugural market survey will receive an extra 10% discount only on their first Better Leaders Academy course, adding up to a 25% price reduction.

Is there a discount for multiple people from one organization?

If an organization sends two people to the course, there is a 20% discount for both participants. If an organization decides to send three people, the discount is 30% per registration. Please reach out to us at hello@betterleaderslab.com to discuss company packages and receive access to the discounted offers.

What are the conditions for cancellation?

Cancellation is free of charge until December 18, 2023. You have to write personally to hello@betterleaderslab.com. Until January 8, 2024, 50% of the participation fee will be retained. If a cancellation is made after January 8, 2024, the full participation fee is non refundable.

Is it possible to nominate a substitute in case of an emergency?

Yes, this is possible. In case you need to cancel after the refund deadline due to an emergency, you are free to nominate another colleague to take your place at the course. 

Is it possible to attend another Better Leaders course at a later date if I am unable to attend at short notice?

No, this is not possible. If you are within the cancellation period, we will refund the fee or partial fee and you can book a new course again at a later date.

What happens if the course needs to be canceled due to COVID-19 or another unforeseen emergency situation?

We will, of course, reimburse your full attendance fee. Please understand that we can’t be held responsible for reimbursement of potential travel arrangements you might have made.

What can I do if I took the course and hated it?

We are very proud to deliver best-in-class executive education programs, and client satisfaction is of utmost importance to us. In the unlikely case that you finished the full course and are not satisfied with the experience, we will therefore reimburse the participation fee.
